Shades Creek (left)
and Cahaba River (right), Alabama
Two pictures of the activities of the Friends of Shades Creek taken during its annual canoe trip in June, 2002. Shades Creek is 55 miles long and enters the Cahaba River, Alabama's last free-flowing river, south of Birmingham. The upper 15 miles is heavily developed. This is where we test water monthly at 8 sites. The photographs were taken about a half-mile from the confluence with the Cahaba. It is a site of a variety of coal-age fossils.
